Nikonos amphibious camera mount, 1960s-2000s | 35 mm underwater and amphibious cameras

Nikonos is the classic Nikon amphibious camera system derived from the Calypso design. Its lens mount was built for sealed, underwater-capable cameras rather than ordinary SLR or rangefinder bodies, and it is distinct from the later Nikonos RS SLR mount.

The lens family includes amphibious lenses usable in air and specialized underwater lenses corrected for water as part of the optical path. That makes the system unusually dependent on shooting environment: a lens that performs beautifully underwater may not be intended for ordinary aerial photography.

For catalog browsing, Nikonos entries should be treated as environmental optics, not just rugged 35 mm lenses. The mount is important because it shows optical design responding to water, pressure sealing, scale focusing, and underwater field curvature rather than to a conventional camera body alone.
