Sony: G Master Design Philosophy

Sony's α Universe hosts a numbered run of developer interviews in which the engineering team explains the design thinking behind each G Master lens. Every installment takes one lens and works through its optical concept, the aspherical and extra-low-dispersion elements it required, the bokeh and resolution targets Sony set for it, and the focus actuators chosen to move its groups.

The series is Japanese-language only; Sony publishes no English edition of it. The interviews are the closest Sony analogue to Canon's RF Lens World developer panels and Panasonic's Optical Design Department essays.

Installment Index

Installments are numbered 001 through 012 and are listed here newest first. Sony shows no publication date on the individual pages, so none is inferred.

Installments 001, 002 and 006 cover the first-generation FE 24–70mm F2.8 GM, FE 85mm F1.4 GM and FE 16–35mm F2.8 GM. The catalog holds the Mark II versions of all three, which are separate optical designs, so those rows are deliberately left unlinked.

Sony's own interview sub-index is out of date: it lists ten installments and still marks the FE 12–24mm F2.8 GM as forthcoming. The G Master landing page is the reliable entry point.

Additional Sony Lens Design Material

One G Master optical-design interview exists in English, outside the numbered Japanese series.
